@sellanythingonline: We value the underdog so much that it makes us hate the winners. This is leading to such a surge in tall poppy syndrome especially in this country. Supporting the underdog is basically a reflection of ourselves and we can’t support anyone doing well because it literally triggers our pain receptor. Jealousy is a sad thing and we have the control to do something about it #tallpoppy #tallpoppysyndrome #underdog
I think this is also ego driven (to your point). when someone is on the climb a lot of people feel like they’re directly contributing to it and are helping you get there. some people want to feel like they personally gave you that accomplishment and the self esteem/confidence that comes with it. But once people think (even if it’s not based on reality) that you no longer need them, they turn cold. There’s no longer the illusion that they’re helping you get there. It no longer (in their eyes) centers them. I think that’s why when someone gets cancelled the first thing they often target is things you’ve built. They think they’ve given it to you and should be able to take it away anytime they want. It’s an incredibly cold and one-sided way to support someone because it’s not healthy to center oneself when supporting another person.

Yep. Absolutely done with tall poppy syndrome and bullying and toxic envy and jealousy. Seriously considering moving to the US.

100% they relate to the struggle but if you start succeeding they no longer see themselves in your story.. it just is the way it is

This makes me so sad. 😞. When people are successful this should make us motivated to know we can do it too if they can do it?

You see this even in pop stars. The internet will hype someone up and do everything to make them famous. And when they are, they’ll start hating on them.

its a way to restore equilibrium within selves. when familiarity becomes unfamiliar just like anything & everything most experience that discomfort negatively rather than with curiosity.

In the philippines we call this the crab mentality. You pull people down when they're getting higher.

Most Aussies are cool but they just tdont like someone else being a braggart or show off because it makes us feel bad about our own short comings which are many - for example in America if you’re not in the football team you don’t exist and if you don’t get accepted and finish a good college what even are you

Llevo años hablando de eso, porque mal gente a actuado así en horditas rabiosas simplemente porque algo en no les incomodó y es más fácil inventarte chismes o buscarte el fallo invisible que mirarse así mismos y hacer algo al respecto

You explained this so well! Can we make a social group in Australia that has events for people that are not like this. It’s exhausting!!! And not like a typical boring networking event with speakers etc but one with activities that facilitate deeper connection and is a low pressure event or meet up’s. Bc this year I’ve lived away from Australia half the year in Greece and as soon as I get back I will do all the logistics to leave Australia as a tax resident and live away half the year. But when I’m there this kind of energy is so draining to be around bc some people are obviously this way and others have tall poppy syndrome subconsciously because the culture has it embedded in them so well where it’s their body language, the way they talk to you, the things they say without realising how and why they’ve said it etc.. Australia is so beautiful but idk lately its energy is not a high vibrational place!

That’s because people haven’t learned how to use comparison to motivate themselves. There’s a large body of work that explores this and it’s something to do with up vs downward comparison. It sounds like this tall poppy research uses some of that work but I learned about it in my undergrad degree years ago. I think a lot of it was based on social media comparisons and locality which I found interesting. Upward comparisons can have insane positive benefits but the key is explicitly teaching people how to compare upward/downward in healthy or positive ways. Kind of impossible when the large majority of our population are dysregulated, starving, broke, and well… the literacy crisis but IMAGINE.
