Caregiving taught me how easy it is to disappear while still showing up every day. For years, choosing myself felt selfish. I could make sure everybody else was okay, fed, safe, cared for and comfortable—and still put Nadine at the bottom of the list. I'm learning something different now. Choosing myself doesn't mean I stopped caring about other people. It means I finally included myself among the people I care for. Sometimes choosing yourself looks big. Sometimes it's simply taking the longer shower, sitting down to eat, leaving the dishes until morning, saying no without writing a paragraph to explain it, or resting when everything isn't finished.
