@kporter.stuff: Why CAD skills are not mechanical engineering, design process explained Fast in CAD is a skill. It is not the skill. Function, loads, process, then model. 🙌🏼⚙️ #mechanicalengineering #cad #solidworks #productdesign #engineeringcareer

F1 engineer Adrian Newey still uses pencils on a drafting table - someone else converts his drawings to CAD

Absolutely correct. I've also seen the CAD users ability/competentcy, or lack thereof, determine the part design.

As an engineer, you should absolutely need to be able to use cad. I don’t want to depend on someone else for every update to a part while doing FEA and CFD simulations. I mean its an easy skill to learn and a great place to start your career anyway, learn what is practically possible and manufacturable before getting too deep in into design… speaking from experience. Been a mechanical design engineer for 30 years. The young engineers in our company are much different to me. Very paper driven. Everything must have a specification, documented. Hell I usually just sent the models to the laser cutters and machine shops. I'm not gonna bother draughting, it takes time, I was 1 person. The focus was on building stuff. Now the focus is on documenting stuff, and the build is secondary or even tertiary. I'd build off the back of a cigarette box.

I do aircraft sheet metal and I get some pretty wild interactions with engineers just because they don’t understand the process of installation. Or they’ll come up with some rare-source material composition and it’s non-procurable until next year.

I've taught both drafting and CAD. No one wants to learn drafting because they think CAD can do everything the same but faster 🙃

Totally agree. Conceptualise, design, engineer, make it work... THEN go and CAD your brains out.

as someone who was a modelling wizard at a stage I’d like to point out that to be good at it you have to be good at visualising assembly order and manufacturing order. Like how is the manufacturing team going to make all the components and put them all together. Do your drawings have all the necessary dimensions (and tolerances)? Like it’s a fun job but if you don’t keep your wits about you you can’t make very expensive mistakes haha

Okay, my software does FEA which I use for heat transfer and stress analysis. I also use it for design automation and product development. How is that not engineering lol. I can take a whole part from design, testing, and setting up doing the cam stuff and never switch out of inventor. I do it often in fact. Then I go down to where they build the stuff and we iterate until its ready for for drawings and ppap.

I came back to write this comment. After having my own team, I quit drawing for 3+ years. When everything was sh1t, I just drew for 1 year and retaught a new team. That's now 2 years ago.. Drawing. Ughh
