Fort Macomb is a historic 19th-century brick fort located along Chef Menteur Pass in New Orleans, Louisiana, near the Venetian Isles community. Built in 1822 to help defend the waterways leading to New Orleans, the fort was originally named Fort Wood in 1827 before being renamed Fort Macomb in 1851, in honor of General Alexander Macomb. Its unique wedge-shaped design featured defensive walls, bastions, surrounding moats, and a central barracks known as a citadel. During the American Civil War, Louisiana forces took control of Fort Macomb in January 1861 before Union troops regained possession in 1862. A fire destroyed its barracks in 1867, leading to its gradual abandonment by the U.S. Army. The fort was officially decommissioned in 1871 and later added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 11, 1978. Today, the deteriorating structure remains under state ownership, with its condition making public access unsafe. Despite its abandoned state, Fort Macomb has gained recognition as a filming location for several productions, including the television series True Detective and Into the Badlands. In 2016, Beyoncé also filmed portions of her visual album Lemonade at the historic site. Hurricane Katrina destroyed a nearby marina in 2005, while erosion and structural deterioration have continued to threaten the fort’s remaining walls. Today, its haunting ruins stand as a reminder of Louisiana’s military history and architectural past. #louisiana #usa🇺🇸
