@dwnews: The Nobel Prize in physics 2026 has gone to Belgian scientist Francis Halzen for "decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin." The committee described the neutrinos as "ghostly messages from space." The announcement was made at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on Tuesday, October 6. It has been awarded 119 times to 230 laureates between 1901 and 2025. Last year’s prize was awarded to US-based trio John Clarke, Michel Devoret and John Martinis for their work in quantum mechanics. The award for physics is the second Nobel prize to be announced this week after medicine, with laureates set to be named in chemistry, literature and peace in the days up to Friday. #dwnews
The prizes will be presented at ceremonies on 10 December. Each one carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, which is equivalent to just over €1 million or $1.2 million.
