In July 2015, Tara Lambert believed she was meeting a man willing to target her husband’s former wife, Kellie Cooke. What Lambert did not know was that the supposed hired operative was actually an undercover sheriff’s deputy—and their conversations were being recorded. The investigation began after authorities were warned about the alleged plan. During her meetings with the undercover deputy, prosecutors said Lambert provided information about Cooke and discussed how the proposed attack could be carried out. On July 28, she handed the deputy $125 as a partial payment. Officers arrested her shortly afterward. Cooke was the mother of Lambert’s husband’s two daughters, placing the alleged plot inside an already strained family relationship. Prosecutors argued that Lambert’s words, planning and payment demonstrated a genuine intention to have Cooke harmed. Her defence maintained that she was emotionally unstable and had been pushed into the agreement by the undercover officer. In January 2016, a jury convicted Lambert of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder while acquitting her of a separate allegation involving Cooke’s husband, Shawn. She received a seven-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine. The case then took an unusual legal turn. An appellate court reversed the conviction in 2017 because the original judgment entry did not properly document the jury’s verdict. Lambert was prosecuted again and, in July 2018, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated murder. She received a five-year sentence with credit for the time she had already served.
