Boko has criticised large official travel entourages as wasteful. He’s made a rule for himself: keep security, drop unnecessary staff. As a lawyer and advocate by training, Boko has kept his cabinet on its toes by voraciously reading all government briefs. Boko’s fiscal and administrative discipline contrasts sharply with, say, that of Kenya’s William Ruto - a prolific flyer with more than 60 foreign trips in 9 months costing $10 million, including a 2024 US State visit featuring a jet chartered for $1.5 million and a 30-person delegation. Botswana’s higher income per capita of $7,800 compared with Kenya’s $2,714 makes the contrast starker still. If wealthy Botswana is trimming fat, why can’t the rest of Africa?
