Ignore it, these things are scams and rarely legal.

If you’ve proof you tried to pay it . That proves you were willing to pay . It’s them that refused. Don’t hand over any money till you’ve looked into it .

apparently if they pass it on to a debt collection company the dept is no longer valid and you can contest it, not sure on how but it's worth looking into!

it's illegal for (or certainly used to be) car parking tickets to be anything over £100! revise your legal jargon and you'll get them to eff off girl, I've done it before and don't have a degree like you! good luck 💜💜💜

If it’s at £270 already, there’s a chance it’s gone beyond reminders. Have you opened any other correspondence or reminders prior to sending the fee? The original attempt of payment may be relevant in appealing the new amount but missed correspondence doesn’t usually stop fee escalation x

If it’s private don’t even bother engaging with it, facts happened to me and went away. Council is a must pay for the ticket

I’ve had a private parking company phone me (possibly the same company) over a parking ticket, told them I wasn’t going to pay, I didn’t need to and haven’t heard from them since. Also mentioned how their calls and letters were harassment (it’s been 3 years) Made me giggle when the og letter had the ‘can’t pay we will take it away’ tv show logo on.

Not true that they can't accept funds if it's passed to debt collectors!

I was told that if a debt company cannot provide you with the ORIGINAL bill, then you dont owe the company. Like they have to have the 1st printed bill, or all the own is a printed peice of paper with your name on it, as it isn't original. i could be very wrong but thats my understanding

In England, a debt collector chasing £270 is not the same as actually being taken to court. If you tried to pay the original parking charge before it was passed on, keep any proof and dispute the extra fees. Ask for a full breakdown of how it reached £270. If you receive an actual Letter Before Claim or County Court claim form, don’t ignore it and respond by the deadline. A court threat does not automatically mean a CCJ.

Go on the Free Traffic Legal Advice forum (ftla.com) and put a post up with what your situation is, I did this with a private car parking ticket and they've been SO helpful and given so much good advice with step by step what to do, even writing the representations for me. Don't pay the debt collectors anything til you've spoken to them!!

There’s a group on Facebook that help with private parking invoices, they’re experts on it at this point and give lots of free advice plus paid services when it does get to court

hi girly, if the ticket was issued through a 3rd party, ignore fines, often they don't escalate the charge if you don't respond. But if the fine is through the local council then it's a bit more tricky. I would recommend going to your local citizens advice for accurate legal advice x

is this a private parking company or a council run one?
I ask because I had a similar situation in 2019 when I worked next door to a Tesco. I had nowhere else to park, and the Tesco car park was huge with plenty of spaces, so I used to park there while I was at work. Over the course of around six months, I ended up receiving 30 parking charges (not even exaggerating 🥲)
The charges eventually increased with some going up to £300, and they threatened legal action, court proceedings and bailiffs. However, I never really engaged with them or made any payments. I believe I sent them one email using a template I found online, but after that they didn't persist with the matter.
Nothing ever came of it. I never received a CCJ or any defaults on my credit file, and they eventually stopped chasing me altogether.
From what I remember, there are specific rules and protections around private parking companies, and there was a lot of useful information and guidance available online at the time. I did quite a bit of research myself, I would google the company and look at the reviews and comments from people x
