I worked on a bone marrow transplant unit many years ago. We had a young 20s female patient who had multiple failed transplants to cure her leukemia. Towards the end of her life, she developed severe chronic c.diff and weighed only 80 lbs at 5’8”. She had been discharged home and got readmitted with this awful infection after her 4th bone marrow transplant. We couldn’t figure out why nothing was working to help her when her mom finally admitted to trying to diy a fecal transplant at home. Her mom used her own poop, blended it in a blender, and administered it to her daughter via enema. This is when fecal transplants were a brand new technology and that was DEFINITELY not the right way. Plus that patient would have never qualified because of her immune suppression. The patient brutally died not even 4 weeks later. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen in my career.

It's a horrific infection. I was able to get rid of it by pulse dosing vancomycin, but I would have done the fecal transplant. I think now they put it in pill form rather than the enema.
