I’m South Asian, but I was born and raised in Germany, and I still never really got this part of the German culture. One incident that shocked me the most was with a school friend. We used to hang out after school with other friends, and they would often have snacks and drinks at my place. Of course, I never asked her for money. Culturally speaking, the thought wouldn’t even have crossed my mind. A few years later, I visited her home twice, about a year apart. The second time, she made a comment about me drinking her juice. That really caught me off guard. The next time I visited, I brought my own drink and told her I’d rather drink my own stuff because I don’t like people keeping track of what I eat or drink. Even when I ate at friends’ homes, I often paid or contributed, so this felt especially strange to me. I grew up with the idea that when someone is your guest, you serve them and make them feel welcome. Hospitality and warmth toward friends/ guests were simply part of my upbringing.

This German guy once made me drink from his bottle, and then approximated the number of cents I owed him based on the amount of water I drank, and asked me to pay him back 😭 This after I had just paid for our taxi ride. I mentioned it to him and he said the same thing – “But I didn’t ask”…
