Ayaz-Kala, Toprak-Kala & Kyzyl-Kala — The Desert Legacy of Khorezm🏜️ - Ayaz-Kala, meaning “Cold Fortress” or “Fortress of the Wind”, is one of the most striking strongholds of ancient Khorezm. Built around the 2nd century BC, it stands atop a rocky hill, overlooking the vast Kyzylkum desert — silent, powerful, timeless. - Toprak-Kala was the royal capital. A true city of kings, with over 100 palace rooms, sacred temples, and murals that once told the stories of gods and rulers. It was the cultural and political heart of the Khorezmian kingdom. - Kyzyl-Kala, or “Red Fortress”, was smaller but strategically important. It guarded Toprak-Kala’s western flank and stood as a defensive outpost for centuries. Today, parts of it have been carefully restored. 📍 All three fortresses are located in modern-day Karakalpakstan, a semi-autonomous republic in northwestern Uzbekistan — a land where the winds still whisper stories from thousands of years ago.
