Aki :
For those who don't understand, that's Plato's theory, it's called the analogy of the cave. The people you see sitting in the cave are most of us, people who think they live in reality but it's not the real one, they ignore what life really is and they think what they see in front of them is reality, without questioning anything. But in reality what they see is shadows of made up objects that are being created from a fire behind them. In the analogy they're also tied up from head to toe and can only see the front of them. These chains symbolise their ignorance. If someone questions what they see, then they can break the chains, and gradually come out of the cave by learning more and more about the true reality and eventually they get out of the cave and face the real world, as it really is. Then they have to make a choice, do they stay out there enjoying reality, or they go down the cave again and help the others escape the lie they're living? (My Greeks know how painful it was to learn all these, let me know if I forgot something)
