Replying to @user6964514594211 yes, my supervisor used to call folks in this dynamic a “help-rejecting complainer.” I think I’m a bit more like you where I see communication, to include complaining, as a language of needs. Need for connection, comfort, repair, and sometimes, to just be held without being fixed. I share this label just to offer a potential conceptual frame, and also because I think it can be helpful to the person who is feeling like their help is getting rejected. Because if someone finds themself in the space of, “omg they’re being a help-rejecting complainer right now!” It can be a good cue to oneself to notice the urgency, frustration, desire, and ultimately misattunement of trying to help to someone who is presently not open to it and thus rejecting it. Allowing yourself to just make contact with the rejection can help you dial back the reach to help and instead either attune more to what they need, or to begin soothing yourself because feeling helpless is really hard!!
