@andrewzinthemorning: 419 CITIZEN SHOUT OUT Presented by Eureka Eatery Perrysburg I’ve been thinking about this guy ever since our event last week with the East Side Candy Boyz. He showed up, gave a very generous donation directly to the boys, offered them jobs, talked about helping get them bikes so they wouldn’t have to keep walking all the way from East Toledo to Oregon — but honestly, it wasn’t even the money that stuck with me. It was the way he talked to them. One thing he said absolutely stopped me. He complimented the boys on the way they handled their interaction with the Oregon police officer. He basically told them: You kept your composure. You listened. You stayed respectful. Because if you hadn’t, the story could have become about how YOU acted instead of what happened to you. Man. That is the kind of advice young men need to hear. I wish I had captured the entire interaction on video because there was just something about his presence. You could tell this wasn’t somebody showing up for attention. He genuinely cared about these boys, their future, and making sure they understood how much potential they have. I’m not embarrassed to say watching it actually brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes being a good citizen isn’t some huge public act. Sometimes it’s showing up, caring, giving a kid some encouragement, offering an opportunity and speaking a little wisdom into their life. THAT is what a 419 Citizen Shout Out is supposed to be about. This guy absolutely deserves one.
