it’s each to their own, but if you think every championship in every era holds the exact same weight, that’s just dumb. acknowledging that the league gets more talented, deeper, faster, and more offensively advanced over time isn’t “bringing down” past generations. jordan was absolutely ahead of his era, but let’s not act like his path was automatically harder because he played in the 90s. his bulls were making the playoffs with 38 wins and getting beaten by great teams in the 80s until those teams aged out, the league expanded and the talent pool changed, and then he dominated the 90s. that doesn’t discredit jordan, it just gives context to his era.
and if we’re gonna use championships as the end all argument, then bill russell is the goat with 11 championships in 13 seasons and an 11-1 record in the finals. but obviously we understand that doesn’t automatically make him greater than everyone because every era had different rules, competition, pacing, and circumstances. if you want the most successful career, it’s russell. if you want the greatest combination of career, stats and accolades, you can argue kareem. if you want the biggest icon, it’s jordan. and if you were in a lab trying to build the most complete basketball player possible, it’s lebron. lebron being 4-6 doesn’t automatically disqualify him from the goat debate any more than russell having 11 rings automatically settles it.
