My bf is from a smaller place in Iceland and they still do this there. I swear every time he talks about people from his hometown they all have crazy nicknames😂

No mention that Loðbrok isn't the surname and that Ragnar's kids would not have bore a nickname for a surname. Really?

In the kitchen where I work we have another chef called Baby Hands because he said ouch once when he put his hands in hot water. Sometimes all it takes is once.

Not a viking but Æthelred Unræd, usually translated as Æthelred the unread more literally Æthelred the poorly counseled.

There was a skald named “Ormstunga” “Wormtongue” which is probably where Tolkien got the name from. And one named “Skvaldri” which means “prattler”. I love Norse names so much.

I read a book earlier this year about Viking artifacts and two memorable names that came up were Foul-Farter and Wiggle-Ass. Both of which would be great names for my cat, also.

We still have two kinds of nicknames in Norwegian. «Kallenavn» that are nicknames you get called to your face and «Utnavn» the names people call you that you never gets called to your face. Mixing the first up with the latter is very very embarrassing.

If I may add a couple, there was a lady revered for her wisdom who if I remember correctly became a queen or a noble her name was Aus the Deep Minded. There was a fierce Viking who lost a leg during battle and apparently a wooden leg didn’t slow him down was Onund Tree Foot.

Love those nicknames. One of my favourites is the priest "Roald Langtale", translating to Roald Longspeech. Giving impressively boring sermons I guess.

One of my nicknames for my son is Stumbledore... think I'll add Thorgeir the Clumsy to the rotation.

The blue cheek one - the first thought I had when you said it was that maybe the woman was cold or ‘frigid’ - in that she wasn’t inclined to affection. I was surprised when you said LITERALLY cheeks turning blue - which does make sense, but I wonder why I specifically associated it with a woman uninterested in romance or male attention.

According to the sagas, Gange-Rolv (Rollo) walked because he was too tall - not too fat! 😄

Hallgerður was called Langbrók or longpants in Njála, and it was probably because she had long legs, maybe they were also twisted 🤷‍♀️Her brother is my ancestor x28.

Harald blåtand pr Harald Bluetooth should have had a blue tooth then, however that Bluetooth part of his name doesn't come up on history until about 160 years after his death so you really shouldn't take the names that serious or as reliable

As a swede, I can say these types of nicknames are at least still going with my parents generation, born in the 60’s😅
