Breath burst white from mouths. Sweat ran down faces already numb from cold. Then Yossi Cohen slammed into a new niggun. No warning. No buildup. Just fire. The keyboard screamed. The drums crashed. And hundreds of exhausted men suddenly moved like they had just arrived. A circle snapped into formation so violently that three smaller circles were swallowed into it. One man shouted, “I CAN’T FEEL MY LEGS!” Another screamed back: “GOOD! THEY’RE STILL DANCING!” The crowd erupted. Shoulders locked. Bodies spun. Shoes skidded and caught. A hat went flying over six rows of dancers and vanished forever into the black. Yossi pushed harder. The melody climbed like it wanted to tear through the roofs. For a moment the entire avenue became one organism—one pulse, one shout, one impossible refusal to become tired. And beneath every movement, the Awtsmoos was creating the whole thing from absolute nothing. Not sustaining an old street. Creating the street. Not continuing an old dancer. Creating the dancer. The hand gripping a shoulder. The shoulder receiving it. The sound. The ear. The cold. The blackness itself. Every instant appeared fresh, savage, total. A bochur looked up at the sky and laughed. Still no dawn. Not even close. Perfect. Because nobody wanted rescue from the night. They wanted to conquer it from inside. Yossi hit the refrain again. The street exploded louder than before.
