"One of the greatest obstacles facing Kundalini awakening today is misunderstanding. When powerful energetic, emotional, and psychological changes unfold, they are often viewed exclusively as pathology. Terms such as “Kundalini psychosis” create fear around experiences described by spiritual traditions for thousands of years. While genuine mental illness should never be dismissed, not every non-ordinary state of consciousness is evidence of disease. Kundalini awakening can resemble a psychological crisis. Buried emotions surface, identities dissolve, sleep changes, sensitivity increases, and unusual perceptions, energetic sensations, vivid dreams, or altered states may emerge. Yet from a spiritual perspective, these may represent the psyche, nervous system, and energy body undergoing profound reorganization. What appears to be a breakdown may sometimes be a breakthrough. Labeling every Kundalini-related experience as psychosis can deprive the individual of a meaningful framework. Fear amplifies suffering, while understanding creates stability and helps navigate the transformation with greater discernment. This does not mean rejecting medicine. Some individuals may benefit from psychological support, medical evaluation, or therapy. Psychology, neuroscience, spirituality, physiology, and lived experience can all contribute to understanding extraordinary states of consciousness. A Kundalini awakening is neither inherently pathological nor automatic evidence of spiritual attainment. It is a transformative process demanding education, discernment, and respect.
