As an employee-it’s so bad. They want us (vets) to get upset at the service to go to ‘community care’ and move to private practice.

l tried applying for the VA as nurse and a veteran...the process is ridiculous!! from their stupid website to the time frame it took like 4 months!! makes no sense everywhere else its background checks, education/qualification verification and interview..their system is so outdated! l ended up taking another job.

I am a nurse practitioner at the VA in Tampa and we have been interviewing replacement physicians for 2 years now and when the candidate gets the salary quote in these dire times where the economy is struggling people do not want to take a pay cut to work here. As a veteran it is insane the number of providers we are short by. I have been here for almost 11 years and I have never seen it this bad.

They cut vacant positions to “save money”. Leadership cuts vacant positions off the approved vacancy position list to save money. Too look good on the budget. We were on a hiring freeze since 2023 that we weren’t allowed to say was a hiring freeze.

Every time I go to the VA I have a new physician, there has been 3 just this year and just found out the current one is leaving. 2 out of three have been health connect only. The continuity of care is going down fast. Its getting bad can't make appointments because they are so short staffed.

I’ve seen this first hand for the psychiatric care. I work at a mental health office in Florida and we’ve been trying so hard to help VA patients still receive care with us; many of them are getting notices about VA unable to give a new referral stating they need to now see a VA psychiatrist on base but they have been severely understaffed and wait list is almost a year. Many of them are on medications they can’t be without, let alone for a year. It is INFURIATING and heartbreaking what has been happening and is only getting worse.
