Droves of music-loving attendees filled Baker neighborhood streets Saturday to hear local musicians perform at the inaugural Denver PorchFest. One-hundred-ninety-two musicians performed on 85 neighborhood porches during the free event, which claimed the title of largest single-day music festival in Colorado. PorchFest originated in Ithaca, New York, in the early 2000s before other states and cities — including Colorado Springs and Boulder — picked up the idea and filled their own communities with porchside music. The nearly 200 musicians selected to play in Denver Saturday were picked out of over 500 applicants, according to organizer and local musician Bradley Schwartz. The musical genres featured Saturday ran the gamut, with indie and Americana music filling the streets just blocks away from punk, R&B and electronic tunes. Though the event was free, donations of $20 or more were requested, and went toward paying the performers and supporting music therapy in Denver Public Schools. Attendee and Baker neighborhood resident Jezzie Manrriquez, who listened to the bands warm up all morning before taking to the streets herself to hear the assorted sets, said she appreciates the connective opportunity Denver PorchFest gave local musicians and the wider community. “It’s such a cool concept to get more local bands out, and (get) more people in the area, to give them exposure,” she said. “And it’s a nice way to build community in the neighborhood.” 🎥 Elizabeth Pond
