The greatest excuse we Mahayana Buddhists love to hide behind….. “Mahayana is based on compassion.” Ah yes…..compassion. The magical word that apparently makes every contradiction disappear. Whenever our behavior doesn’t quite match the Dharma, just sprinkle some “compassion” on it. Attachment? Compassion. Favoritism? Compassion. Refusing to confront uncomfortable truths? Obviously compassion. And if anyone questions it, simply remind them that Mahayana is the “Great Vehicle,” so clearly we must be operating on a spiritual level too profound for ordinary people to understand. At this point, “compassion” risks becoming less of a practice and more of a theological get-out-of-jail-free card. Real compassion isn’t whatever makes us feel kind, comfortable, or morally superior. Compassion without wisdom can become sentimentality….compassion used to justify our own preferences is just attachment wearing Buddhist robes. If we’re going to invoke compassion every five minutes, perhaps we should first make sure we’re practicing it…..not merely using the word as incense to cover the smell of our own excuses. —Dordrak Gyalsay
