@keystonelds: Please be respectful to the original creator in the comments. @that_one_exmo if I've missed any pre-1884 sources that corroborate this story, please let me know. I'm late to the game in responding to this older video, but here are some notes I didn't include in my response that may be useful to viewers: - Braden's argument seems like a gish gallop to me. It seems like he was just throwing the whole bowl of spaghetti at the wall and hoping that something would stick. Looks like this particular rumor did. - It's unclear whether or not the "Eli" suspected of being in the mob had the last name "Johnson." And even if he did have that last name, it doesn't necessarily mean it must have been Marinda's uncle, Eli -- but it could have been. If it was her uncle, and he was there because of Joseph's impropriety, then it seems odd that we have no record of it until half a century later, at least second-hand. - The claim that Joseph was targeted because of sexual impropriety also would *not* explain why Sidney Rigdon was also tarred and feather. - It's true that about 10 years after this event, Marinda was sealed to Joseph as a plural wife (historians disagree on whether it was a marriage for "time," "eternity," or for "time & eternity"). Scholars like Brian Hales point to an eternity-only sealing, since she was married civilly to Orson Hyde (she and Hyde had 10 kids together, as per her FamilySearch profile). In any case, as per her own testimony, Marinda didn't feel like Joseph did anything improper with or around her. - I think that the basis for the Eli/Edward claim miiight be from an entry in History of the Church 1:260, which mentions Eli & Edward Johnson in a list of recent apostates (it's not totally clear if they are relatives of the immediate Johnson family, but it's possible). The next entry talks about the tarring and feathering. So we see the names Eli/Edward in proximity to the event in question, but only the name "Eli" (and not "Johnson") is directly tied to it. Additionally, no mention of a motive from either individual is written.

can you at least stop calling it a mob when you talk about this. it sounds just like Trump when he calls. protesters terrorists. words do matter and I'm not trying to correct you, but you're using that word from a place of believing Joseph Smith apparently. that being said, please don't think I'm attacking you. I'm being serious here. it wasn't a mob that was formed by God. where the devil in order to test the people of the true Church of Christ. it's okay to accept the fact that human behavior leads to weird things, and one of those weird things is that Joseph Smith was into young girls and while I appreciate you digging into this and finding out the facts, it just feels like you're trying to distract from the fact that he is who he is. Joseph Smith was not chosen by God to usher in the new and only true religion of God. now Joseph Smith was chosen by a God. The only God that mattered to him. survival. his his amygdala. he was in an environment that is really hard to survive in and he did his best and he should not be faulted for that. The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints should not have to feel bad about what Joseph Smith did, but they also don't have to tell stories that don't coincide with reality just to cover it up and make sure that they feel better. if Joseph Smith were alive today, I would tell him he doesn't need to feel bad for anything that he did. it wasn't because of God or the devil. it was because he was doing everything he needed to do in order to survive and I respect the hell. out of that. what I do not respect is people finding out the truth about him and instead of accepting that and looking for ways to proceed and move forward as a church to make sure that these things don't happen again, they tried to distract or cover it up. again, please know that I'm not trying to attack you. I'm just trying to point out that everyone has biases, including you including me. this video was not enough information for me to gather whether or not you are a true believer or whether you have waken up to the truth. I've never dug into this specific one so I'm glad you did and shared with us. I'm just wondering if I need to go back and look through e

Joseph Smith did eventually marry Marinda 10 years later and that’s really all you need to know. Either the Johnson men were clairvoyant or Joseph really was making inappropriate advances toward the 16-year-old Marinda. Given that we now know Joseph approached girls as young as 14 to marry him, this one is a no-brainer.

So reporting something years after the fact and not being able to keep a straight story is an issue suddenly?

Good points. Maybe you could spend some time documenting late entries in church history. For example, Joseph Smith receiving the visit from Elijah. It was not documented in the Book of Commandments, but a later addition.

And yet that late statement is still more evidence than the mob claiming it was because Joseph was just so righteous.

then help me out. I've never understood why Joseph was tarred and feathered or jailed in an era of "religious fervor." people say polygamy, but I don't know that I believe that either. who cares if he married other women of his own faith? people say it's because he started his own religion outside of the norm. again... "religious fervor." who cares? however, children... he married a 14 year old. and while there's no evidence of intimacy, theres no evidence there wasnt. that deserves a tar and feathering. and that is the only thing that makes sense to me.

😈 keystonelds, im mormon but don't agree with your synopsis; for over 150 years, the mormon church denied the fact that Joseph was even married to multiple women. Why would you claim that it took 50 years for evidence of something else to come out on the opposing side as your evidence, when you don't even accept the fact that joseph was married to multiple women and having multiple affairs hidden from the microscope...
