The father of Nazrul Islam, one of two Bangladeshis executed in Saudi Arabia on October 14, says his son called him just three days before the execution to say he was in trouble. That was the last time they spoke. “For about three years and three months, my son was in jail. Last Sunday he called me and said he was in trouble. That was my last conversation with him. Then on Wednesday, I learned my son had been executed,” Abdul Basir told reporters. Nazrul, 25, was from Birampur village in Sultanpur Union of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila. He was the eldest of four children of Abdul Basir and Rahima Begum, a farming family. In search of a better life for his family, Nazrul went to Saudi Arabia on November 10, 2022, after his family borrowed Tk 7 lakh to send him. About a month later, he got a job as a cleaner at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. About six to eight months after he arrived, in 2023, Saudi police arrested him along with a young woman named Sweety Akter on allegations of immoral acts inside a mosque in Makkah, according to his family. He was held in jails in Riyadh and Makkah. His family learned of his arrest about a month later, when he called from jail, but he did not tell them why he had been detained. While in jail, he called his family every Sunday. “I still don’t know why my son was in jail. Suddenly I saw news of his death on Facebook,” his father said. “Only Allah knows what crime my son committed. Now I just want my son’s body back on the soil of his country.” On the night of October 14, after hearing the news of Nazrul’s execution, his paternal aunt, Abeda Begum, died of a heart attack. “My son is gone, my sister is gone too. I’ve lost everything,” Abdul Basir said through tears. Family members and a friend allege that Nazrul was framed. These claims have not been verified. Two of Nazrul’s distant cousins, Mostakim Bhuiyan and Imam Hasan Bhuiyan, told Prothom Alo that while working as a cleaner, Nazrul had a dispute with a man he said was a Pakistani national, and had told his parents about it over the phone.
