Georgia’s Senate race was initially expected to be one of the closest races of the cycle, but I now think it should be a fairly comfortable Democratic hold. Jon Ossoff has developed a clear advantage over Republican Congressman Mike Collins, and forecasters have increasingly moved the race toward Democrats. Cook Political Report shifted it from Lean Democratic to Likely Democratic, which I think reflects how this race has developed. I think Ossoff is a strong candidate who has built a recognizable political image beyond Georgia. He comes across as charismatic and confident, and I think that helps him appeal to voters who aren’t necessarily committed Democrats. His growing national profile has also brought him more attention, and he seems well positioned to benefit from the Democratic environment I’m expecting this year. Collins currently represents Georgia’s 10th District, but I don’t think his close association with Trump and the Republican Party is particularly helpful in this environment. Georgia remains competitive, but the Democratic trends across much of metro Atlanta give Ossoff a strong foundation. I expect those suburban areas to be especially important, with Ossoff benefiting from both his own appeal and voters who want a check on Trump. Recent polling has consistently shown Ossoff ahead, including an October AJC poll that gave him an eight-point lead. Polls aren’t guarantees, but I think the combination of his candidate strength, suburban support, and the national environment points toward a clear victory.
