Didn’t expect this 🔥💨 There has been issues with a damp chimney breast at this property along with dripping during sometimes driving rain. When it comes to damp issues with a chimney breast you can pretty much guarantee you will get conflicting advice. It isn’t unusual for clients to spend many thousand of pounds on a new roof and even a chimney taken down and the damp issues still occurs. This is because sometimes the damp is caused by hygroscopic salts formed from the long term burning of fossil fuels. An extreme form of this is deliquescent salts, and this is where they will run down the wall, and also the area will be wet to the touch. This will occur if salts are present at times of high humidity, and this can even occur in the summer, and even when it’s raining, so this is what makes it so confusing. The only way to confirm this is by using the gravimetric method in BRE DIGEST 245, which will tell you if it’s wet or salts. Anyway on the other video I’ll show you how the external issues were identified using the smoke machine, which was the first time I’ve ever used it for this purpose. Obviously with smoke getting into the roof space this is very dangerous and that’s why it’s necessary if you do have a chimney that you use it needs to be well maintained, and professionally inspected. So make sure yours is in tip top condition 🔥 #damp #chimney #chimneysweep #penetratingdamp #hygroscopicsalts #smoketester
