Born in Balkh, in present-day Afghanistan, and later living in Konya, modern-day Turkey, he became one of history's most beloved poets. His poetry centers on love, longing, compassion, spiritual growth, and the search for God. His most famous work, the Masnavi, is often called one of the greatest masterpieces of Persian literature. Rumi wrote about the human heart, the struggle with the ego, the pain of separation, and the way love can transform a person. For him, love was not simply an emotion between two people, but a path that could lead the heart closer to the Divine. A defining chapter of Rumi's life began in 1244, when he met Shams of Tabriz, a wandering Persian Sufi dervish in Konya. Shams challenged Rumi to look beyond the knowledge he had gathered as a scholar and to experience faith and love more directly. Their relationship became deeply spiritual and transformative, changing Rumi from a respected religious scholar into the poet and mystic the world remembers today.
