The woman who owned the coffee shop didn’t see the debt as a burden for her. You saw it as a burden for you. Trying to save people for ourselves is a big lesson for us especially empaths.

In Swahili there is a saying, “tenda wema nenda zako”. Basically translates to “do good and be on your way”.

Everybody is talking about her reaction but what about charging her the coffee. Sorry this is being ungrateful.

Nah. That went too far. She can’t give you a cup of coffee? That’s just gross.

This is just cope. It’s okay to expect gratitude at a scale commensurate with the gift, and it’s okay to call out a lack of gratitude

Giving is technically a selfish act. We do it because it makes us feel good. Giving without a payoff … without anyone knowing… that’s when you know you’re giving selflessly.

If I lent someone $100 and they paid it back on time, it would be a nice gesture for them to show some appreciation—buying me a cup of coffee, for example. But showing no gratitude at all is not good behavior in any sense, and it can’t really be interpreted as something positive.😤

It’s interesting because I used to volunteer for a charity and receive material donations on their behalf and I saw a lot of people disappointed when y wasn’t euphoric when I received what they donated.

Come on. It’s human nature to expect a thank you with real feelings behind it. That is not a normal reaction.

Hmmmmm. In as much as I totally agree that we should give without expecting anything in return, the receiver should learn to show gratitude. It’s up to you not to care about the reaction but I really believe showing gratitude is equally important

I think many people here are missing the point. She’s not so much interrogating the recipient’s lack of a grand expression of gratitude, as she is her expectation of one. Had she known before the woman would react that way, would she still have offered the money?
