Traditionally, you are correct. But the meaning is shifting, as so often happens with language. Does decimate mean to kill every tenth person? Do awesome and awful mean inspiring awe? Language evolves. It's interesting to know the etymology of words. It's also cool to learn about the evolution of their meanings.

Language changes and even the dictionaries disagree with you. Its not the first definition but most dictionaries have "severely shock" as one of the definitions. Origin of word and current usage of word do not need to match forever
