Adinaluz, affectionately known to family and friends as Adina, was a 10th-grade student at Winter Haven High School, where she was a beacon of hope and joy, spreading love and kindness to all those around her. Her family said she was a loving and joyful teenager who enjoyed helping others and had many dreams for her future. According to information shared by her family, Adinaluz had been especially excited about trying out for the school's cheerleading team on the day of the crash. How the Winter Haven School Bus Crash Happened According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, 39 people were aboard school bus No. 1819, including 37 students, the bus driver, and the bus driver's 9-year-old daughter. The preliminary investigation indicates the school bus was traveling eastbound on Lucerne Park Road at approximately 6:13 a.m. when a westbound white Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line and entered the bus's lane. Sheriff Judd said the Malibu clipped the rear tires of the school bus, setting off a “chain reaction.” Following the initial impact, the school bus crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a silver Jeep head-on. The force of the collision caused the school bus to overturn, while the Jeep caught fire. Sheriff Judd confirmed that Adinaluz, a 10th-grade student, and the driver of the silver Jeep were killed in the crash. Multiple Students Taken to Hospitals The crash prompted a large emergency response, with injured students and other victims transported to hospitals by medical helicopters, ambulances, and private vehicles. Officials reported approximately five to seven trauma alerts following the collision. As of approximately 10 a.m. Monday, Sheriff Judd said one person remained in critical condition, while several others continued receiving treatment. BayCare said Winter Haven Hospital received 22 patients, including 19 children and three adults. Of those patients, 13 had been treated and released, while the others remained under evaluation in the hospital's emergency center. Winter Haven High School Community Mourns The loss of Adinaluz has deeply affected the Winter Haven High School community. Polk County School Board Chair Justin Sharpless addressed the tragedy during a news conference at the crash scene. “There are really no words that can take away the pain of losing a young person,” Sharpless said.
