When Max, a seven-year-old English Foxhound, was returned to the shelter for the fourth time, he isolated himself in a corner of his cage, his head bowed, having completely lost all hope. The first few days at home demanded infinite patience and constant attention. On the very first night, Max refused to get onto the bed or approach the soft cushion that Clara had prepared for him. He preferred to lie directly on the floor, right next to the front door, his head down, his eyes fixed on the parquet. He seemed to expect, at any moment, to be taken back to a cage once again. Seeing his anxiety, Clara refused to leave him alone with his ghosts. She took a blanket, lay down on the floor by his side, and stayed there without trying to pet or force him. It was like this, side by side on the cold floor, that they spent their first hours together. In the middle of the night, she felt a slight shift: Max had cautiously moved closer, coming to rest the tip of his warm snout against her hand. Over the following weeks, anxiety gradually gave way to an immense curiosity. Max began to explore every room of the house with meticulous attention. He sniffed each piece of furniture, grew accustomed to the everyday noises, and slowly learned to relax. During their morning outings in the wide, open fields on the outskirts of the neighborhood, well before sunrise, Clara decided one day to unhook his leash. It was a revelation. During their morning outings in the wide, open fields on the outskirts of the neighborhood, well before sunrise, Clara decided one day to unhook his leash. It was a revelation. He bolted into a mad dash, galloping until he was out of breath, bounding over the tall grass, crossing small streams, and tracking butterflies with overflowing enthusiasm. Watching him run like that under the morning sky, Clara understood something essential: this extraordinary energy that three successive families had labeled an unbearable flaw or an "unmanageable surplus" was actually his finest virtue. It was the pure and simple manifestation of his love for life. One particularly sunny Sunday, her ten-year-old son, Leo, decided to join them for their weekly walk. Full of energy, he took his bicycle to ride along the dirt paths that snaked through the hills. Max trotted by his side, his tail wagging joyfully, delighted by the company. Leo laughed out loud, enjoying racing against his four-legged companion. Arriving at the top of a small slope, her son turned around, shouting joyfully that he was going to head down at full speed. He set off, but the sunken path hid a trap: a large stone deeply embedded in the ground. The front wheel of the bicycle struck it head-on. The impact was terrible. The bike flipped abruptly, and Leo was thrown violently several meters into the dry grass. A cry of anguish and pain shattered the stillness of the countryside. Clara rushed toward him, her heart pounding wildly, only to find her son lying on the ground, his face pale and twisted in agony. His leg was in a frightening and abnormal position. In the rush of leaving, she had made the mistake of forgetting her cell phone on the kitchen table. They were completely isolated in the middle of a deserted field where no one could hear her cries for help. Unable to carry her son without risking worsening his injury, and faced with the impossibility of reaching anyone, a paralyzing panic overtook her. She sat down next to Leo, tears burning her eyes, more helpless than she had ever been. It was at that exact moment that Max grasped the full weight of the situation. He lowered his snout toward Leo, let out a soft whimpering sound, and then locked his gaze in the direction they had come from. Without the slightest hesitation, guided by an incredibly powerful protective instinct, he sprang forward with a spectacular bound. He ran like no dog had ever run before, tearing through the prairies at phenomenal speed, clearing obstacles without ever slowing down. He stopped dead in front of the property of their neighbor, Mrs. Gable. There, he began to bark frantically, scratching at the gate insistently, letting out warning howls while making quick back-and-fo
