The #1 skincare mistake I see in my office: It’s adding hydrating serums too early. If sunscreen, retinol, and moisturizer are the structure of the house, hydrating serums are the paint and the detailing. All the time a patient comes in and says, “Well, I’m using a face wash and a hyaluronic acid serum.” And my response is always the same: you skipped to a fun product without the essentials. You’re trying to paint a house with no foundation, and your skin won’t give you the results you want. Build the foundation first, then add the fun stuff. But once you’ve got the basics down, I love hydrating serums. They’re that extra oomph that has people asking why your skin looks so good. Pair with a moisturizer (or moisturizer+SPF) to seal them in. When I say slightly damp skin, I mean like after washing your face, you don’t need to re-wet it. My favs:
- SkinMedica HA5 (excellent absorption & feels nice, good splurge buy)
- Obagi Hydro Drops (also has niacinamide which calms and brightens)
- The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid (budget!)
- ROC Hyaluronic Acid Serum Capsules (fun fact: I used to use these anytime I was getting ready for a date because they gave me an instant dewy look) ✨ Some other faves:
- La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Gel B5 (glycerin skin protectant). Not marketed as a serum, but it’s amazing and very calming. Makes a great travel serum.
- Aestura A-Cica365 for my K-beauty lovers. A great example of a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid and glycerin) paired with niacinamide and other soothing ingredients. Next up is a hot topic 🔥 #dermatology #skincare #hyaluronicacid #skincareroutine dermatologist skin care routine serum
