In management, sometimes you have to address the whole team. Even if a person has done something wrong, and you pull them in the office, they will report to HR that they are being harassed. It’s truly a catch 22.

That happens at a lot of jobs. It happened to me several times — people were quitting because of one person, or getting fired for standing up for themselves. The manager was intimidated by that person, so instead of addressing the real issue, they’d talk to the whole department like everyone was the problem. They just didn’t have enough courage to stand up to the one person causing all the trouble.

Unfortunately, this is a tactic taught. I recently learned that addressing the person in a separate space is often preferred than public admonishment. I know it still doesn't make it valid. Ego protection is getting out of hand.
