@earthexplorersex: Buried beneath Antarctica’s ice sheet is Lake Vostok, one of the largest known subglacial lakes on Earth. Its water lies beneath more than 3 kilometers of ice, isolated from the surface by an enormous frozen barrier. Scientists first identified the lake through radar and other geophysical measurements, revealing a hidden body of liquid water roughly the size of Lake Ontario. The extreme environment has raised questions about what kinds of microorganisms might survive beneath the ice, although evidence for a unique ecosystem remains limited and difficult to study without contamination. What makes Lake Vostok remarkable is not a hidden civilization or mysterious creature, but the fact that liquid water can exist in complete darkness beneath one of the most extreme environments on Earth. 🧊🌍 An entire lake exists beneath a landscape that looks completely frozen. What do you think scientists might discover if they could safely explore its deepest waters? #LakeVostok #Antarctica #HiddenWorlds #EarthScience #EarthExplorers
