Self-surveillance is the answer. With evidence such as historic GPS locations or call recordings, it is quicker for you to to close down their investigation into you and for the police to remove you from what they refer to as their 'list'. You are only innocent in the eyes of the police until you prove your innocence otherwise; they dig deeper. Oh, those embarrassing things expect to be a topic down at the pub, and everyone will in the community will know. Police aren't going to respect your privicy, why should they?
