For most lifters, the bench press is the ultimate test of strength. But six-time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates had a very different opinion about it. Despite building one of the most powerful physiques in bodybuilding history, Yates often said that the barbell bench press is not the best exercise for chest development. His reasoning was simple. When most people bench press heavy weight, the chest is not doing most of the work. Instead, the front delts and triceps start taking over the movement. The heavier the weight gets, the more this happens. That means many lifters spend years trying to increase their bench press while their chest barely grows. For bodybuilding, Yates believed that the goal is not moving the most weight. The goal is creating maximum tension in the target muscle. That’s why he preferred exercises that allowed better control and stronger contraction in the chest. Machine presses, incline presses, and controlled movements made it easier to focus on the pecs without letting other muscles dominate the lift. Another problem with heavy bench pressing is injury risk. According to Yates, pushing maximal weight on the bar often puts enormous stress on the shoulders. And when shoulders get injured, chest training becomes almost impossible. So while bench press might be one of the most popular exercises in the gym, Dorian Yates believed it was often overrated for bodybuilding. Because in the end, bigger numbers on the bar don’t always mean bigger muscles. #goldenera #mrolympia #GymTok #benchpress #bodybuilding
