@leahshomestead: There’s something seriously wrong with one of my rabbits, and this is one of those situations that shows the difficult side of raising animals for meat. She’s an older doe I was already preparing to retire, but today she suddenly lost the use of her back legs. Sometimes responsible animal husbandry means making decisions you never wanted to make. 💔 #MeatRabbits #Homesteading #RabbitRaising

She seems to also stargaze. I would personally cull immediately and get the rabbit tested for parasites. Seems neurological and I would want to know if it is caused by something that could have infected other rabbits too.

it's your homestead so ultimately it up to you but I would be going to the vet myself 1) you don't know what this is, and you just released her kits into the rest of the colony you could lose the entire operation if it's turns out to be contagious. 2) I was raised that any animal that has done its job well, ie provided good offspring, milk, eggs etcetera has earned its healthcare, it may seem silly but we believe in rewarding a job well done, the chicken the repeatedly smothered her cluches? not worth the money, but the hen that years in a row hatched 12+ eggs several times a year and manages to keep them alive? if she ever needs a vet she will get one.

It is a common myth that rabbits cannot get bumble, foot they can and it can make it so painful to walk that they drag their feet behind them. Wire cages are horrible.

I found a buck the same way in the spring, pretty sure he jumped/twisted wrong and broke his back. When I culled him I made sure to have a close look & his spine was broken! Hopefully that’s not the case for your doe:(

Sorry for your loss. 😞 She needs to be dispatched if she's not using her hind legs at all. Either she has a broken spine or has EC. 80% of rabbits are infected and only a very small percentage actually shows symptoms. When you cull make sure you skin her and check the spine for blood or damage. If there's no sign of a spinal injury check her organs and eyes.

I do see her doing stargazing. I would absolutely hard cull, get those kits on some probiotics to help prevent weaning enteritis and keep them separate from the rest of your rabbits. Prayers the kits do okay! I'm so sorry also. Raising these guys can sometimes be absolutely heartbreaking. 😔

take her to the vet anyways? she could very easily be in pain even if you take her to just get pain meds that’s better than the risk of leaving her with possible suffering

This may be a dumb question but why don’t you always take them vet? I assumed it was important for meat farmers to because what if they had something contagious to your other animals meant for consumption?
