@durbannetwork: “Our government is allowing illegal immigrants to be documented. South Africa, this is not about being black, white, coloured or Indian. If we don’t stand up now, we are going to lose this country. We must stand up and fight for South Africa.” 🗣️ Teresa Nortje

South Africans are loud about marches and shutdowns, but when it’s time to act, many sit at home treating it like a holiday.

My conspiracy theory is this: what if making it easier for people to apply for asylum in South Africa is not only about humanitarian reasons, but also about future political power? If someone enters the asylum system, eventually obtains legal status, and later qualifies for permanent residence or citizenship, they could ultimately become part of the voting population. Now imagine tens of thousands of people going through that process while the ANC is struggling to maintain its support among South African voters. Could creating a larger future pool of citizens become a way of creating potential future voters?
I'm not saying this is proof that Ramaphosa or the ANC is deliberately doing this to secure votes — that's the conspiracy theory. But politically, it raises a question: if a government is losing support among its traditional voters, could immigration and citizenship policy eventually be used to change the composition of the electorate? The real question isn't whether asylum seekers can vote today; it's whether today's asylum policies could create tomorrow's citizens — and therefore tomorrow's voters.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN :
To every South African: you’re loud on social media when it’s time to march and call for shutdowns, but when it’s time to actually stand up, many of you are sitting at home treating the shutdown like a holiday. Meanwhile, the country is falling apart.
And look at our public schools. Thousands of foreign-national learners are being educated in South Africa’s public-school system, while the state uses public revenue to fund education for everyone who qualifies under our constitutional framework. The DBE’s latest verification identified 247,751 undocumented foreign-national learners across the participating provinces. South Africans have every right to demand answers about how many public resources are being spent, how overcrowding is being managed, and whether the government is properly balancing the needs of South African communities with its legal obligations to children
