@mosheh: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says society should accept some “bad things” happening as a result of artificial intelligence, in exchange for the technology’s broader benefits. Altman argues on the 'Decoded' podcast from @politico that the risk of scams, misuse, and hacking should not prevent regular people from having access to AI. He argues for "lighter touch" regulation, but giving people "liberty and human agency" to use this technology to shape the future. At the same time, Altman agrees that a "serious loss" of human control to AI must be prevented. Altman's comments highlight a philosophical divide between OpenAI and rival Anthropic, which has generally pushed for stronger regulation and slowing development of the most powerful frontier AI models. OpenAI joined other industry leaders, including Anthropic, at the White House last week in pledging to strengthen safeguards by 'self-policing.' The comments are getting pushback from AI critics on Capitol Hill. “Mr. Altman: What ‘bad things’ should we accept to advance AI?” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), one of the loudest proponents on Capitol Hill of significant AI regulation, posted on X in response to the interview. “Losing tens of millions of jobs? A mass surveillance state? A mental health crisis for our kids? A global financial crisis? Mass extinction?”
