@drgreghealth: Here's why I don't let any of my patients drink tap water. I've been a functional medicine doctor for more than 25 years, and this isn't about taste. Reason one, disinfection byproducts. Chlorine does its job killing pathogens, but when it reacts with organic matter in the water, it forms compounds called trihalomethanes. Research published in Environmental Health Perspectives linked that exposure to a 33 percent increased risk of bladder cancer and a 15 percent increased risk of colorectal cancer, at levels already below the current regulatory limit. The legal limit and the safe limit are not the same number. Reason two, lead. Aging pipes and service lines in a huge share of American homes and schools leach lead into water that looks and tastes completely clean. There is no level of lead exposure considered safe for a developing brain or body. Reason three, what treatment plants were never built to remove. Pharmaceutical residue, hormone byproducts, and forever chemicals pass through standard municipal filtration essentially untouched, because that filtration was designed decades ago for pathogens, not modern chemistry. A simple carbon filter, or reverse osmosis, solves most of this for less than the bottled water you're probably already buying. Filter it. Just don't hope it's fine. Find the root. Heal the whole.
