@farmhop.app: USDA's new cost and return numbers, updated Oct. 1, show all nine field crops it tracks lost money per acre in 2025. An acre of corn cost $900.52 to grow and the corn on it was worth $782.44, and rice lost $276.64 an acre after losing $14.67 the year before. It is the second year in a row all nine came out negative; before 2024 the last time was 2006. USDA's full tally counts the farmer's own unpaid labor, land and machinery and leaves out government payments, so every crop still covered its operating costs, just not the rest. If an acre of corn cost $900 to grow, nobody would grow corn.
