@guardian: About 450,000 people joined the high school protests across France on Tuesday, organisers said, as hundreds of high schools were blockaded in a nationwide day of action. The protesters are campaigning against long hours, missing teachers and crumbling classrooms. The French interior ministry’s figure is much lower: it said about 250,000 joined the protests, with 56,000 people reported in Paris. But how did a few student blockades turn into a nationwide protest movement? Jon Henley, the Guardian's Europe correspondent based in Paris, explains. And head to the link in bio to read the full story.

The analysis is spot on. The country and its people are resistant to reform, while its former colonies are no longer willing to foot the bill. On top of that, one can’t help but feel sorry for the younger generation. They are trapped in outdated ways of thinking and acting imposed by an older generation that still seems to believe it is a world power and the centre of the universe.

Well there is a very cheap thing they can do already which is lessen the school hours. Those kids are at school from 8h-18h which is horrendous. Kids especially need breaks, they’re not machines!

Tbf I’m 36 but studying international law in France (masters), one of my classrooms has mouldy window frames and the halls of the buildings remind me of school when I was 11… I’m from uk and honestly some of the buildings are a downgrade from college and school

are these grievances coming from non white neighborhoods? have family in Paris, they are north African, there is a clear difference between how non white French citizens are treated. I wonder if that aspect is at work here too.

I was born in 1997 in France and as I grew up even in private schools classes were overcrowded and stuff. I could not imagine how it was in public schools. I was lucky. It just got worse with time…
