Cold-weather prep looks a little different when you have little ones in the house. For me, it’s less about reaching for something only when sickness shows up and more about keeping traditional preparations ready as part of our seasonal routine. Little Lungs is one of those preparations. Fire cider has a long history as a warming herbal vinegar, but when I’m making anything for my toddler, I’m mindful that children are not simply smaller adults. Strength, ingredients, serving size, and how something is given all matter for them. A few important things to remember: • Never give honey to a child under 12 months. • Fire cider should NOT be given to children as a straight shot. Vinegar is highly acidic, so I dilute it well in water or another drink. • More herbs and more potency do not automatically mean better, especially with children. Herbal preparations are supportive home remedies, not substitutes for appropriate medical care. Persistent fever, breathing difficulty, dehydration, unusual sleepiness, or worsening symptoms need medical attention. And if your family is just beginning to explore herbal wellness, you don’t have to introduce everything at once. Learn the plants, understand what you’re using, start gently, and build your home apothecary with easy and comfort. Little Lungs Kid-Friendly Fire Cider (Gentle Immunity Tonic) Ingredients (makes ~3 cups) ½ cup fresh ginger root, chopped ½cup fresh turmeric root or 2 tsp powder 1 orange, peel and all 1 lemon, peel and all 1 green apple, chopped 1 small or ½ medium red onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, lightly crushed 1 tbsp ceylon cinnamon chips or 1 stick 1 tsp whole cloves 1 tsp black peppercorns, cracked 2-3 sprigs fresh thyme 1-2 sprigs fresh mint 1 sprigs fresh sage 2 to 3 cups raw apple cider vinegar 1-2 cups wineberries or raspberries 1/2 cup raw honey (after infusion) Directions • Wash and air dry all ingredients • Chop/slice ginger, turmeric, orange, lemon, apple, and onion. • Lightly crush garlic cloves to release their flavor and oils. • In a clean glass jar, layer the ingredients: ginger, turmeric, red onion, garlic, apple, citrus, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, thyme, mint, sage, and berries if using. • Pour raw apple cider vinegar with the mother over the mixture until everything is fully submerged. Mother is optional. • Cover tightly, and store in a cool, dark place for 3-4 weeks, shaking gently every day. • After steeping, strain the liquid into a clean jar or bottle. Press herbs gently to extract all juice. • Stir in honey to taste . Use for Kids • Ages 2-5: ½-1 teaspoon daily, diluted in warm water or tea. • Ages 6-12: 1-2 teaspoons daily, can be taken straight or diluted • Use more during colds or congestion, but always dilute for younger kids NOT for babies 1 and under Mint • Safe for kids in small amounts. • Cooling and soothing, helps ease congestion and upset tummies. • Use just a few fresh leaves so the flavor isn't overwhelming. Sage • Safe in small culinary amounts for children over 2 years old. • Supports sore throats and calms coughs. • Stick to 1 small sprigs in the batch, Tips for Older Kid-Friendly Fire Cider • Use less hot spice (skip jalapeño or cut down to ¼-½ pepper) • Add extra apple or a little orange peel for natural sweetness. • Always stir in plenty of honey after straining to mellow the flavor. • For younger children (under 5), dilute the tonic with warm water, herbal tea or juice. Why not add honey while brewing? It's best not to add honey while the fire cider is brewing. Honey is antimicrobial and can slow or interfere with the vinegar's ability to properly extract the medicinal compounds from your herbs and roots. Why wait until after straining? • Full extraction: Apple cider vinegar pulls out the heat, oils, and medicinal properties much more effectively on its own. • Preservation: Honey added too early may ferment or change texture in the acidic vinegar. • Control sweetness: Waiting lets you taste the final tonic and add just the right amount of honey for balance. #firecider
