Thats called diesel runaway, the only way to switch it off is by blocking the intake, otherwise the engine revs until it dies on its own

For anyone curious, we call that a deasil runaway. On normal occasions, an engine will us deasil and air for combustion, no spark plugs here. When you turn the car off, you just turn off the fuel pump amd engine dies. On this scenario, oil which is flammable leaks into the cylinder, maybe a worn out head gasket but the important thing is now the engine is using oil as fuel. Even if you try turning car off, it won't help. What makes this even more dangerous is that it uncontrolled and the engine will rev might higher than it supposed, so it ends up killing itself. Without air, there's no fire/ignition, so you have to block the air intake to stop this. However to me, it seems easier said then done
