@theaih8ter: AI was used to bring a dead man “back” to speak at his killer’s sentencing and now the sentence has been thrown out. Christopher Pelkey was killed in a 2021 road-rage incident. During the sentencing of Gabriel Paul Horcasitas, Pelkey’s family delivered victim impact statements, including one written by Pelkey’s sister imagining what he might have said if he were still alive. But instead of simply reading those words herself, an AI-generated version of Pelkey was created to deliver them in court. Horcasitas was sentenced to 10.5 years in prison. His attorneys appealed, arguing that using the AI-generated victim at sentencing was improper and they won. So now we have AI-generated versions of dead people speaking in court proceedings that can have real consequences for real criminal cases.
