@watchorbis: Moltke's 1889 voice: three things that didn't fit in the video. What else he said On his first cylinder, after the tribute to the phonograph, the field marshal recites Goethe's Faust — "Ye instruments, forsooth, but jeer at me / With wheel and cog." On the second, after the Hamlet line, he adds a maxim of his own and signs it with his title. At least four cylinders were recorded that day; two survive. Bismarck, at the wrong speed Theo Wangemann recorded Otto von Bismarck on October 7, 1889, reciting the American song "In Good Old Colony Times," a Latin student song and the opening of "La Marseillaise." When it was played at Moltke's estate, Moltke recognized the voice only once the speed was corrected. How a box of mystery wax got its names The cylinders were found in 1957 in Edison's library in West Orange, New Jersey, with no idea what was on them. After the 2011 transfer, historians Patrick Feaster and Stephan Puille matched the spoken places, dates and texts to newspaper reports of Wangemann's 1889 visits. Send this to the friend who never deletes a voice memo. Moltke would approve.
