Spend time with the Holy Spirit not only when you need direction, but because you desire fellowship with Him. 2. Spend Time in His Presence Create quiet moments to pray, worship, and simply become still before God. Constant noise can make you insensitive to gentle promptings. 3. Know the Word of God The Holy Spirit will never lead you contrary to Scripture. The more familiar you become with God’s Word, the better you can discern what is truly from Him. 4. Learn to Discern the Different Voices Not every thought, emotion, desire, fear, or opportunity is the Holy Spirit. Learn to distinguish between your own voice, the voices of others, your emotions, and the Spirit’s leading. 5. Pay Attention to the Inner Witness The Holy Spirit may lead through a quiet conviction, restraint, peace, burden, or persistent inward prompting. Don’t mistake every emotion for God’s voice; test what you sense. 6. Be Still & Listen Prayer is not only speaking. Sometimes you need to stop asking and simply listen. Give the Holy Spirit room to impress something upon your heart. 7. Obey What He Reveals You become more sensitive to His voice as you respond to His leading. Don’t keep asking God for new instructions while ignoring the last thing He already told you to do. The goal isn’t simply to hear the Holy Spirit. It is to know Him well enough to recognize His leading and to love Him enough to obey.
