@kristydms: Trauma-informed care is about recognizing that the way we perform an examination can affect how a patient experiences their healthcare. We aren't "just taking pictures." We're interacting with a person during what can be an incredibly vulnerable moment. And sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do isn't having the perfect thing to say. It's making sure the patient knows: You have a voice here. You can ask questions. You can tell me to pause. And I will treat you with dignity. our scope does NOT mean we have to be silent. As sonographers, we can: • Explain what we are doing before and during the exam • Ask permission before sensitive parts of the examination • Give patients opportunities to ask questions or pause • Use respectful, nonjudgmental language • Preserve privacy and dignity • Pay attention to verbal AND nonverbal cues • Avoid unnecessary exposure or unnecessary repetition of sensitive procedures • Give patients appropriate choices whenever possible • Communicate concerns to the appropriate member of the care team • Know when a patient needs additional support or resources That matters. #sonographer #sonography #ultrasoundtech #ultrasound #med

I’m currently an ultrasound student and my current site doesn’t do OB unless they come in through the ER and r in their first tri. But even normal pelvic TVs I always feel bad being in the room bc it feels so private. My preceptor always starts the TV then I watch the patients reaction and then decide if I wanna scan them or not. Yes, it’s probably not the best doing that for my education but I just feel guilty

If my patient even hesitates to give consent, I make sure that they know it’s ok if they do t want it and they are never obligated to do something they do not want.

So well said! I have not done several TV exams bc the patient was to anxious or did not consent. Document everything. I also write in the chart the details the patient had told me

I don’t know what my trauma might be, that hasn’t happened to me, just the idea of having to put an object in there just scares and stresses me out, I also can’t handle a speculum :/

I’ve had to deal with the most traumatic and ethical dilemma as a sonographer during my clinical rotation and it made me never want to work at that certain hospital ever again and showed me how disgusting it can be and also how important it is to advocate for your patient in the er especially icu 🥲
