thinking Nathan fielder radiates dark energy is one of the wildest things I've ever read on this all

I don't see JW's work as mean-spirited, but some of Nathan's work absolutely comes across that way to me.

I loved history of concrete and John is such a sweet guy! The needle drop for the credits was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.

Man I couldn't even fathom thinking John Wilson was being mean to that musician. I found it fascinating and humanizing as you noted. Like obviously we all know that the guy giving tequila samples or leading the bar band is a distinct person with a life but it was interesting spending time with him and learning about him. One of my favorite parts of a great movie

I loved John Wilson’s show, never found it mean-spirited. I wish he’d put out more stuff!

Nathan 100% likes to make people look dumb for comedy but he does it to himself too and that is a part of comedy sometimes😭

NFY was very mean-spirited at times, I feel like that's hard to deny when you go back and watch a lot of the episodes tbh. the rehearsal is much more self aware and it feels like he actively *tries* to make it less mean-spirited imo. his ethics being questionable are very much part of his schtick imo. never once thought or considered John Wilson was mean-spirited, he just seems genuinely curious about ppl regardless of their weirdness.

definitely not John Wilson, he's never cruel to them, he just observes, but some of Nathan's NFY stuff was undeniably cruel, especially his use of non English speakers, or like the Cory tightrope episode, that was straight out mean, but in the rehearsal he does effectively turn it back on himself and he's the butt of the joke more often than not (which sometimes feels like active repentance for NFY tbh). I'm saying this as someone who thinks he's a genius, but he can be very mean in very obvious ways.

i don’t think the history of concrete is mean-spirited at all, i do wish john wilson dropped his persona a bit during these human moments, i found the consistent dead pan delivery of the narration to get very tiring by the end of the run time.

John Wilson clearly saw himself in the musician. The movie is about what drives us to make art even when no one seems interested in it.

I feel like some of the early Nathan for you can get a little mean spirited but I feel like he definitely grew out of that in later seasons

i’m so surprised to hear that people think john wilson is mean-spirited! the sense i get is just that he finds people interesting, and likes digging into their weirdness. even people who think they’re pretty normal (i’d say im one of them) are going to reveal quirks and oddities in the right moment. i think he does such a good job of portraying those parts of his subjects with a genuine curiosity and interest in who they are. like i was initially disgusted by the tattoo preservation stuff, but then considering it more as the scene went on i found it so interesting! even if it’s not for me im like wow what a way to hold the memory of your loved one. and it made me spend some time thinking about why i thought it was gross in the first place. also great video btw!

Loved it and love both of their work. Maybe Nathan went too far with the child actor stuff in S2 of the rehearsal but he also corrected and made up for it in S3.

this conversation loops around to Lolcows vs Eccentric people online. my algorithm has an impossible time deciphering between the eccentric people I love and unwell Lolcows. There's such a difference between me laughing at the person for how different they are, and laughing at myself for how much of me I see in them, and none of that excludes my ability to sincerely love the way that eccentric people are. I can laugh, and also find wonder and joy and admiration in things that are odd.

Commenting mostly for engagement but I agree with most people that Nathan Fielder has grown as an artist and that NFY definitely crosses the line more often then it gets it right. I feel like you can see what rubs people the wrong way in something like Nirvana the band the show since that feels like it scratches a similar without the joke being on Innocent bystanders.

I felt this way about some of the people Tim & Eric would have on their show, like the joke was just that the person was poor and/or weird, but I don't ever get this vibe from Fielder or Wilson

I’m a poet, and think of John Wilson as a poet who makes poems out of people and their stories. I’m always so moved by the humanism I see in his work. The story of the musician and the judge in Concrete was a perfect example of that to me. Also, the glimpses of John’s life that we see always show that he is just as messy and imperfect as his subjects.

Eric Edward Fishboy :
The musician storyline was very human in history of concrete. (I have played shows where the sound guy disappears to watch sports so that was my favorite moment) Jon is generally very careful about punching down by mostly showing short moments out of context. Nathan punches down but then tries to even it out with self deprecation and it doesn’t always work. The more popular he gets the less that stuff holds up because the punches seem to be coming from further up.

I loved this video! I think the people who view it as mean spirited are not from families that learn to laugh at themselves/each other. I think everyone is a little absurd and that’s what makes people interesting and I think that’s what JW’s work really captures. Sometimes it veers into something sexual/political and that makes people assign views or “takes” to the situations shown which blurs the original point of the work

I couldn’t agree more especially with the point about the musician. I’ll admit my first impression of him was not a good one and the longer we spent with him actually made me regret casting him in a bad light initially. John has an amazing talent of showing us the quirky and eccentric side of humanity that initially is comedic in an almost “laugh AT them” sense and by the end of whatever he makes you end up seeing the humanity in what he portrays and end up laughing at the absurdity with the subject
