A lot of people don't realize that self-loathing is a form of narcissism.

MD here. I enjoy your work. You got a lot of the psychology right, especially about narcissism. The problem with depression is that people who are depressed cannot think of a world in which their sadness doesn’t pervade it. They cannot think of a time when they won’t feel that way and they often feel completely hopeless. And it is exacerbated by drugs and alcohol and the “rockstar” life. It is often up to the people around them to help them get help, which includes medication and therapy, both deeply stigmatized. A lesson for all of us: if someone jokes about suicide, ask them straight out if they are thinking about it. It will not make them do it or hide it etc. Often people “joke” about it as a way of testing the waters and asking for help without asking for help. If they say yes, take them to the nearest emergency department (yes, they deal with mental health) and do not leave them alone. If they say no, ask them how they are doing and if they honestly were joking, ask them not to joke about it because it’s not funny. I know this sounds lame and boring, but it honestly saves people’s lives. Thanks for your work, Jason.

Calling suicide selfish is always very weird to me but this video did make me realize how much of an effect his suicide must of had on his impressionable fans who heard the music as relatable.

Every single decision everyone has ever made ever, is selfish. Yet, I also think it is just as selfish to expect someone else to live when they don’t want to, just to save you from grief.

Grunge was also about the rejection of symbols associated with wealth and prestige, Cobain wouldn't want to wear Gucci or hang out with Gotti. Once he became rich he experienced a moral crisis, because he was talking to David Geffin about buying Leadbelly's guitar for five-hundred thousand dollars. He would have at the same time wanted the guitar but also hated that $500k could feed and house 10 families, money ruins everything. His identity was the rejection of rich people life, like preppy clothing and having a membership at the country club. But then he got rich and was flying in private airplanes and being treated by staff like he was one the people he rejected. He told them to not treat him like he's a rockstar, but people wanted to idolize him.

That’s a lot to put on someone who was only 27 when he died. He had mental struggles before he became globally famous, and was only in Nirvana for seven years. Add to that being in the music industry and how easy it is to become an addict.

"what a privilege it is to grow old and uncool" a simple phrase, but crazy how it hits you like a truck with the storytelling surrounding it. thank you for posting this.

The guy who gave Kurt the shotgun he shot himself with, was a friend from the band Earth (Dylan Carlson). Kurt wanted to be part of that bad before nirvana. Ps. Earth are a fantastic band. Great drums, great riffs.

Here's the thing, most narcissist aren't that talented. They're really good at stunting, but true narcissist I've interacted with rarely stick with anything long enough to be good at it. Why be good, when you can steal?

His suicide definitely soured the idea in my teenage mind too. It didn’t seem selfish. It seemed cowardly. Some one with the money, power, and charisma to reshape the world or at the least the world they interact with was cowardly. He left his daughter and young wife to deal with it. He knew Courtney was an addict and his child couldn’t fend for herself yet. It made me to decide to never walk in his footsteps no matter how great he was. He failed.

I used to think my spouse and kids would be better off without me, too. I don’t think he’s saying that just to say it. That level of depression isn’t logical. It’s like a virus trying to avoid being detected by tricking your immune system, but it’s your brain.

i disagree. the fact he even said that he was narcissist, most narcissists probably wouldn't admit that to anyone nor to themselves. I think he was just deeply troubled, deeply in pain. And to say it was selfish is... certainly a choice. I understand it was wrong of him to leave Courtney and Frances, but let's be honest, depression isn't exactly a convenient mental illness to have. It doesn't let you prioritize your family, let alone your well-being

I hear what you’re saying, really. My rebuttal is: if someone as pure and happy and capable of spreading joy as Robin Williams can do the same thing? Maybe it’s not that simple….

it is always a profoundly selfish decision. but when you're considering it, it feels selfless. i spent years thinking my family would have been better off if i'd never been born. and i felt like a burden on my friends. taking myself out of the equation felt like the best thing for everyone. i get what you're saying and i understand the grief and the loss of what could have been and maybe it will help someone think twice and get help but i also don't love the tone of this...
