My dad is an old Texan cattle rancher and has his favorites, too. Even if they can't contribute a calf anymore, he says they help the herd trust him so it is easier to load them on to trailers and vaccinate them and stuff. I know he is just a softie that gets attached. We even had a bottle baby bull who became a steer because he was our pet. My dad said he was a "personality hire."
